Gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss. It affects supporting tissues surrounding the tooth, tissue of the bone, root surface and ligaments to the bone in the jaw.
Some people are more prone to developing gum disease than others.
There are two stages of gum disease
Stage 1: Gingivitis
Gingivitis is the early stage of gum disease and causes a mild inflammation of the gums. This occurs when plaque builds up around the gum line of the teeth.
The gum then becomes inflamed, red, and tender and bleeds easily when brushed or flossed.
The calculus will need to be removed by a dentist. If the patients keep a good standard of oral hygiene at home, the gums will heal within a week or so.
If gingivitis is left undiagnosed and untreated, the inflammation will spread further down the gum. This causes the tooth to separate from the gum and may lead to a more serious issue – Periodontitis.
Stage 2: Periodontitis
Periodontitis is the advanced stage of gingivitis.
The inflammation has now progressed to the bone of the tooth. This results in loss of bone, connective tissue and support for the tooth.
Left untreated, this can lead to:
- pain
- wobbly teeth
- infection
- loss of teeth
What can cause gum disease?
- poor dental hygiene
- diabetes
- stress
- pregnancy
- smoking
- some medications
Common symptoms
- bleeding gums when brushing your teeth
- tooth movement – loose teeth or teeth that have moved
- bad breath or bad taste in your mouth
- receding gums
- sensitive gums
